Douglas C-74 Globemaster I

Pilot's Handling Notes

ENGINES

The C-74 has four 2800hp Pratt & Whitney R-4360 Wasp Major engines. Each provides 3500hp for take off (at sea level) with water methanol injection and 3250hp (dry) for five minutes in case of emergency.

Before take-off
Cowl flaps closed
No trimming necessary
Flaps to take-off position (20 degrees, press F7 twice)
Take-off
Full throttle and RPM.
Rotate at 112 KIAS
Establish positive rate of climb.
Landing gear up.

Let the aircraft accelerate to 130 KIAS at approx. 500 fpm
At 500 feet AGL:
Cowl flaps 30% open
Retract flaps

Initial climb
Cowl flaps 20% open
50 inches MAP
2550 RPM
150 KIAS
Climb 2000 feet AGL

En route Climb
Cowl flaps 10% open
2350 RPM
45.5 inches MAP
Minimum 500 fpm climb rate
Plan 800 GPH

Cruise
Cowl flaps closed

Maximum cruise        2100 RPM, 39 inches MAP. Plan 650 GPH
Economical cruise     2100 RPM, 37 inches MAP. Plan 550 GPH
Final Cruise at FL210 37 inches MAP, gradually reduce rpm from

2100 to maintain 170 KIAS. Minimum 1400 rpm
Descent
Cowl flaps 0-10% open
2100 RPM
Reduce MAP in stages of 3 inches per minute.
Minimum17 inches MAP

For passenger comfort, decent rate should be 600 fpm or less. (This is not realistic if you follow a Flight Simulator IFR flight plan, then your descent rate should be 800-1200 fpm)

Holding
Cowl flaps 0-10% open
2100 RPM
Slowly reduce MAP to obtain 160 KIAS

Approach and Landing
Max landing weight is 165000 lbs.

Cowl flaps 30% open, 2300 RPM
Reduce to 150 KIAS, flaps stage 1

Nearing Glideslope, reduce to 140 KIAS. Flaps stage 2 (20 degrees)

On descending: Landing gear down. Full flaps (40 degrees).
Cross airfield boundary 100 KIAS

After touchdown

Cowl flaps fully open. Flaps up
Reverse pitch (apply brakes)
Wheel brakes as required
